Fils-Aime: Nintendo relishes “being different” for online play

Reggie Fils-Aime

Nintendo of America President and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime said that Nintendo relishes “being different” when it comes to online play and connectivity on the Nintendo Switch.

“Our goal is to provide that extra Nintendo twist, and that’s what makes our company historically so effective,” Fils-Aime told Forbes. “We don’t do things the same way everyone else does. We relish being different.”

Right now, the only Nintendo Switch game that supports voice chat is Splatoon 2, and gamers have to jump through a couple hoops to get it working. Voice chat requires a separate app for smartphones, and can only be used with friends in specific Splatoon 2 game modes.

“We see that difference as an element that makes us more compelling to the consumer,” Fils-Aime noted.

    wtf

Sometimes different doesn’t mean good Nintendo.
There is a reason why standards are …. standards.
This app needed for anything online related is just not needed.
The Vita could do it while playing games, why wouldn’t the Switch be able to?

Well “different” certainly sounds about right.
