Smash Talk: Our roster expectations, wants, and dreams

smash bros

With the announcement of Smash Bros coming to the Switch, one wait has ended and now another begins. Confirmed to be arriving sometime this year it means we’ve got at most nine months of Smash speculation ahead. With this in mind we’ve decided to spend the next few months looking at certain possibilities, hopes, fears, and ideas that could be implemented in the latest addition. What better way to start the new road to Smash by us giving you a selection of characters we think might be appear.

Who We Expect

Viridi – With Sakurai being the one at the helm of the Kid Icarus reboot on the 3DS. It almost seemed like some of the characters were specifically designed to be included in Smash. Viridi, Hades, and Magnus are all great choices to get into the game, but personally I am gonna go with Viridi. As the Goddess of Nature she could bring something unique to the field as she calls upon nature itself to crush her foes.

Who We Want

Tails – I was torn with who to pick. Deep down I want Solid Snake to return, but feel like it is better to just keep my expectations low. So I’ve chosen the two tailed sidekick of the fastest hedgehog Tails. If any 3rd party franchise deserves a second rep it’s Sonic. I can see the announcement trailer now. Mario and Sonic are fighting, but Luigi joins the fray. All seems lost for the blue hero, but a shadow of a plane crosses over the duel and we then see Tails fly down to make this fight fair!

A “What the heck!?” Character

Epona & Malon – With no new representation since Melee (Unless you count Toon Link) the Zelda franchise is sorely missing a new character. Sadly there just aren’t that many recurring characters. Zant and Ghirahim were skipped over for Brawl and 4. BotW does have the champions, but who do you select? None, is the answer. If there is one character who is as nearly as iconic as the Triforce wielding trio it is the trusty steed Epona. How could she fight? I don’t know. That’s not my job. This is a team who made a moveset for a dog and bird team so I am sure a girl and a horse team won’t be too hard for them.

Who We Expect

Sidon – Everyone’s favorite Zora is going to get a spot on the Smash V roster. As Jack mentioned, it’s been a while since we’ve had a new Zelda character enter the fray, and Sidon was probably the most popular character from Breath of the Wild. He’s a lot more memorable than any of the champions.

Who We Want

Solaire of Astora – It might actually be more shocking that we’re getting a Solaire of Astora amiibo for the upcoming release of Dark Souls Remastered on Nintendo Switch. Solaire of Astora would probably end up being a clone of Link or Marth/Lucina, but it would be pretty cool to get another sword-user since Ganondorf doesn’t seem interested in bringing his to the fight.

A “What the heck!?” Character

Ganondorf with a sword – Crazy, right? Technically, Ganondorf has a sword but it’s only used as a taunt. This actually goes into a bigger hope, which is that Nintendo revamps each character on the roster to remove clones.

Who We Expect

Ninjara – A character from ARMS is a shoe-in. Spring Man is a little too generic, so why not Ninjara? Or, better yet, what if every ARMS character is in the game as an alternative skin, similar to the Koopalings?

Who We Want

Dark Matter – It’s about time Smash gets another Kirby character, and Dark Matter from Kirby’s Dreamland 2 would make for a great addition to the roster.

A “What the heck!?” Character

Abe – If Duck Hunt can make a comeback, then so can Abe from the Oddworld series.

Who We Expect

Ice Climbers – I expect to see Ice Climbers making a comeback to Super Smash Bros. I know in the 2014 Smash version  they didn’t make an appearance due to functionality issues on the 3DS. I think it would be great to have this Ice Climbing duo back. They were a lot of fun to play as and extremely dangerous if you knew how to use them correctly.

Who We Want

Waluigi – We have seen him as an assist trophy, used him in every Mario sports game, and have seen him take over the internet. It is time to let Waluigi join the fight and show the world how great he is. We literally have every other big name character, I mean every Koopaling got to join the fight before him. So now in 2018, it is finally time for Nintendo to give the Super Smash Bros. community what they want, and bring Waluigi to Smash!

A “What the heck!?” Character

Nate from Yo-Kai Watch – Even with a huge fan following from the East, I doubt he and his ghost watch will make it to Super Smash Bros. I am a huge fan of the series and think it would be fun to use Nate and some different Yo-Kai in Smash. If not as a playable character, I could see Yo-Kai coins or the Yo-Kai watch being used as an item or assist character. Just like Pokeballs, Yo-Kai coins could be used to summon various Yo-Kai to use their weird and unique skills to aid in battle.

Who We Expect

Decidueye – Rowlet took the internet by storm, and the new Smash needs a replacement for Greninja from the most recent generation.

Who We Want

Pokemon Trainer – Rotating through Pokemon was a lot of fun in Brawl, and bringing back the Pokemon Trainer can free up some space on a Pokemon-heavy roster.

A “What the heck!?” Character

Sora – We had Cloud in the last Smash Bros despite Final Fantasy VII never releasing on a Nintendo system. Sora has actually been on Nintendo systems before!

Who We Expect

No-DLC Bayonetta – I’d expect them to have Bayonetta from the get-go or unlocked through the game rather than DLC. It just makes sense given the ports to Switch and the third game being released exclusively.

Who We Want

Young Link – I would really like Young Link to make an appearance or have an alternate skin to Toon Link. Just because he seemed to have replaced the Toon Link appearances on handheld with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask having their reboot.

A “What the heck!?” Character

Incineroar – Makes perfect sense being a bipedal “wrestling” sort of Pokemon in similar vein to Mewtwo, Lucario, and Greninja. Decidueye already has Pokken and Primarina is could be a support trophy. Maybe even Hawlucha could make an appearance.
