Senran Kagura Reflexions is the latest title in the Senran Kagura series from Honey∞Parade Games. The typical action of this series is not included in this game in exchange for what is called Reflexology. In the main game mode, you massage the ninja Asuka. These reflexology sessions are very easy to pass. Each one features a different motion to do with the joy-con and HD rumble feedback to match.
I’ve never played a Senran Kagura game before, but I’m familiar with the series from YouTube and forum discussions. I can see why some audiences younger than myself would be interested in this series, but it’s just not for me. Despite that, this game has some of the better jiggle physics I’ve seen in a game like this.
Hand in Hand Confluence
In the main game mode you start out by massaging Asuka’s hands. It’s a simple mini-game, but hidden within is a costume menu.
As you get further into the game and grow closer to Asuka you’ll start to a see a preview of what costume she’ll change into while rubbing her hands. This reveals that each finger and both palms correspond to a specific costume change. Even though it’s a useful tool to have, it can ruin the surprise of what will happen next.
Reflexology, the study of Reflex
What happens next is much stranger than a hand massage. The next step is rubbing Asuka’s back, stomach, arms, or legs. You can also enter water gun mode at this point to shoot some H2O at the ninja.
This part of reflexology essentially just serves as a means to get in the way of what comes next. When you get to use items to massage Asuka. Pulling back to the second step of each level, each body part gives you a different type of reaction. Poking or slapping her breasts, face, and butt are the best way to get scolded, if that’s what you’re into. Any other part of her body will calm her and move you on to the next part of Reflexology. This is where the items come into play.
You start with just your hands which seem to be covered in Mikey Mouse gloves for some reason. Then as Asuka starts to trust you more you’ll unlock other items like the roller, brush, and the — totally not a vibrator — “massager”. Each item unlocks a special type of massage session. A few of the items don’t make sense. I’ve never heard of someone going to get their arms brushed at a massage parlor. It’s also a bit odd that the “massager” is used on Asuka’s stomach, but it’s better than the alternative.
Repetitious to a fault
The reflexology sessions can be fun to start out. Then once you’ve done the same thing five times in a row it starts to feel monotonous. First you rub Asuka’s hands, then you rub her arms, legs, or body, then you use some item that shouldn’t be used for massaging on her. It’s that over and over again until you unlock a new item and get to try a different kind of massage. It would be something if the gameplay was fun or challenging, but this game is neither.
There isn’t much when it comes to gameplay in Senran Kagura Reflexions. Outside of the main Reflexology mode there’s really just one other unique mode in the game. The dress-up mode lets you put Asuka into different costumes unlocked by playing the main game mode. You can also pose her in dozens of innocent or more provocative positions.
